About the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau (TSB)

The Telecommunication Standardization Bureau (TSB) plays a crucial role in the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) by focusing on telecommunication standardization. The TSB provides secretariat support for various groups examining technical, operational, and tariff questions. Its goal is to facilitate the adoption of recommendations that lead to standardized telecommunications and information technology on a global scale.

Key Responsibilities of TSB

  • Support Groups: Offers administrative and logistical support to groups studying relevant issues.
  • Facilitate Recommendations: Helps in the adoption of standards.
  • Collaboration: Works under the guidance of the World Telecommunication Standardization Assemblies (WTSA) and cooperates closely with study groups and advisory groups.

About the Study Groups Department (SGD)

The Study Groups Department (SGD) is integral to managing and supporting the work of ITU-T study groups, which focus on developing global telecommunication standards, known as ITU-T Recommendations. The department also emphasizes the importance of “Bridging the Standardization Gap” to enhance the participation of developing countries in the standards-making process.

Functions of SGD

  • Counsel and Secretariat: Provides secretariat support for various focus groups and ad hoc groups.
  • Collaboration: Maintains relationships with the ITU Radiocommunication and Telecommunication Development Sectors and other global standards organizations like ISO and IEC.

Internship Terms of Reference

The successful intern will work under the supervision of the Counsellor of the ITU-T SG20 and the ITU Focal Point on Smart Sustainable Cities. The internship offers a hands-on experience in the following areas:

Research and Data Analysis

  • Report Drafting: Assist in drafting and editing reports, briefings, and documents. This includes refining executive summaries to highlight key findings.
  • Presentation Preparation: Create graphic-rich, high-quality PowerPoint presentations focused on Smart Sustainable Cities and emerging technologies.
  • Resource Hub Maintenance: Conduct research to keep the Digital Transformation Resource Hub updated.
  • Meeting Assistance: Provide support during meetings to ensure smooth operations.

Project Support

  • Proposal Development: Assist in crafting innovative proposals for new initiatives.
  • Ongoing Project Support: Help manage ongoing projects and new initiatives, from planning through to execution. This includes coordination and reporting to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Event Coordination: Support with the organization and coordination of events.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Flexible Tasks: Perform other related tasks as assigned to meet departmental needs.

Required Competencies

To be successful in this role, candidates should possess the following competencies:

  • Computer Skills: Proficient in MS Office, particularly PowerPoint. Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and/or Adobe Premiere Pro is advantageous.
  • Industry Knowledge: Familiarity with the ICT industry and tech media, including both traditional and new media approaches.
  • Digital Communication Skills: Understanding of best practices in modern digital communication, content analysis, and industry measurement methodologies.

Qualifications Required

Educational Background

  • Degree Requirement: A university degree in fields related to Information and Communication Technologies, Economy, Business Administration, International Relations, International Development Studies, Public Policy, Social Policy, Communications, or related subjects is necessary.

Experience

  • Work Experience: No prior work experience is required for this internship.

Language Proficiency

  • Language Skills: Advanced proficiency in English is required. Knowledge of French and/or Spanish is considered an advantage.

Remuneration Information

This internship is unpaid. However, interns will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic, multicultural environment and engage in ITU-T activities related to AI, IoT, and Smart Sustainable Cities.

  • Financial Responsibilities: Interns are responsible for their own medical insurance, travel expenses, accommodation, and living costs. This unpaid internship does not offer the same employment conditions as paid positions.
